Easing Lower Back Pain: Common Lower Back Pain Remedies

When it comes to easing lower back pain, there are a variety of lower back pain remedies to choose from. Here’s an overview of six of the most common remedies.

1. Pain Relieving Medications and Injections

Pain relieving medications and injections can range from over-the-counter medications to prescription medications to cortisone injections. While all of these will bring some level of relief for lower back pain, they are just temporary solutions because they only address the symptoms of back pain and don’t address the underlying cause of the pain.

2. Physical Therapy

Physical therapy can often be quite effective at relieving lower back pain, but it may or may not address the underlying cause of the pain. A lot depends on how much experience a particular physical therapist has with treating lower back pain and whether he or she can determine what is causing the pain.

3. Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is a lot like physical therapy in that it can often be quite effective at relieving lower back pain, but it may or may not address the underlying cause of the pain. Just like with physical therapy, a lot depends on how much experience a particular chiropractor has with treating lower back pain and whether he or she can determine what is causing the pain.

4. Massage

Regular massage sessions can be a good way to loosen up tight, stiff muscles, and tight, stiff muscles in the lower back, hamstrings, buttocks and hips are a common cause of lower back pain. Regular massage sessions can also be a good way to break up scar tissue in the lower back, and scar tissue can be another cause of lower back pain.

5. Surgery

Any form of surgery, whether for the back or any other area of the body, requires serious consideration. Two very important factors that need to be considered with regard to back surgery are the potential expense and the amount of time and effort it will take to recover from the surgery.

Another important factor to consider with back surgery is that it often only addresses the symptoms of back pain and does not address the underlying cause of the pain.

6. Stretching

I left stretching for last because it’s a simple, inexpensive and often very effective solution for easing lower back pain. As mentioned previously, a common cause of lower back pain is tight, stiff muscles in the lower back, hamstrings, buttocks and hips. Following a regular stretching routine is the best way to loosen up tight, stiff muscles in the lower back, hamstrings, buttocks and hips.

You do need to be aware that some stretches, such as the standing hamstring stretch (where you bend forward at the waist and reach towards the ground), can actually worsen lower back pain. Make sure that before you start any stretching routine, you learn how to stretch properly and safely and learn what stretches will be most appropriate for your specific needs.
